Merthyr Tydfil Youth Orchestra’s programme over the weeks leading up to the Christmas break has been very busy with a number of performances already completed. The next performance date is this coming Saturday, 5th December at 7.00pm, with their Annual Christmas Concert, in the new Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre.

Poet and Novelist’s Visit
The Open Mike Night at the Imperial Hotel tonight (Thursday, 3rd December), welcomes Sheenagh Pugh to Merthyr Tydfil at 7.30pm. Poet, translator, novelist and critic Sheenagh was born in 1950 in Birmingham, moving to Wales in 1971. Sheenagh has published more than ten collections of verse and verse translations, as well as two novels. She won the Forward Prize for Best Individual Poem in 1998, the Welsh Arts Council’s Poem for Today Competition in 1987 and the Cardiff International Poetry Competition in both 1988 and 1994. Sheenagh has also won the Bridport Prize, the PHRAS Prize and the British Comparative Literature Association’s Translation Prize. Her poems have been included in several anthologies, notably Poems on the Underground and The Hutchinson Book of Post-War British Poetry. They have also been set to music, have appeared on the trams of Helsinki and the St Petersburg Underground, and have been translated into German, French, Italian, Russian, Bulgarian, Croatian, Spanish and Dutch. Her collection of poems The Beautiful Lie was shortlisted for the Whitbread Prize 2003 and the Arts Council of Wales Book of the Year Prize 2003, whilst The Movement of Bodies (Seren, 2005) was a Poetry Book Society recommendation and was shortlisted for the T S Eliot Prize. Her poems derive much of their subject matter from history, mythology and the author’s travels, particularly to Iceland. Open Mike Nights are free and supported by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council and Academi. For further information please contact: (01685) 725382 or email arts@merthyr.gov.uk.

More Open Mike

Expect a show full of hilarious misunderstandings, a fantastic new illusion and a magical glow in the dark section. Entry is only £3, with a £2 concessionary rate for OAPs and children. Please Vote Today!

Hi All

The voting phone number for the 3G's Portable Media Centre has been released.
The number is 08716268117 it costs 10p to vote and you can vote up to 10 times,
though this may vary from mobile phones. (Sorry if you recieve this e mail more than once).

Please help support the project, as this will be invaluable asset to young people in South
Wales. Lines are open now and close at midnight tonight.

Details of the project are below and attached...

The Battle is On!!!

The 3G's Development Trust in Merthyr Tydfil have been chosen as a finalist in
the Big Lottery's - People's Millions project. The 3G's Portable Media project will
go head to head on Thursday 26th November 2009 on ITV Wales News The 'Streets
Ahead' Project run by Prestatyn and Meliden Community Action Group.

For more information please go to www.peoplesmillions.org.uk

THE PROJECT

The project, based in Merthyr Tydfil, will provide media training for young people to
increase their skills and raise self-confidence. The portable media centre will enable
us to hold and deliver classes to the community, schools, adult centres, etc.
This equipment will enable us to deliver structured learning which will involve
community members making their own works such as films, music, graphic design and
animation.

The media facility will provide an opportunity to support new initiatives that will have a
substantial impact on the lives of community members in our area. Access to the arts,
media, music and digital industries for our members through our activities will be created
with the aim to provide a voice for local people, promoting learning and raising achievement
in arts & media making for our members.

This project will have a massive impact on the local communities throughout South Wales,
not only will it give local residents training opportunities, we will be able to gain access and
engage with those who have so far been hard to reach. Many of these areas are high on the
deprivation list and this project will give them the chance to access facilities that otherwise
would not have been open to them, which could result in future job opportunities. Through
other projects we have been involved in we know that projects such as these raise
confidence & self esteem in the young people that are involved. It also gives withdrawn
young people the chance to make new friends and gets them involved in team activities;
it also gives them goals – something to look forward to.

Rembrandt Painting
A special loan of Rembrandt van Rijn’s (1606-1669) Portrait of Catrina Hooghsaet from Penrhyn Castle will be on show at National Museum, Cardiff alongside original etchings and Netherlandish portraits from National Museum Wales’s own collection. Museum visitors will be given the opportunity to enjoy the Portrait of Catrina Hooghsaet (1607-1685) for free until 21st March 2010, when it will return to Penrhyn Castle near Bangor – its home since the 1860s. The portrait of the wealthy Amsterdam lady, painted in 1657 is an example of Rembrandt’s outstanding talent for painting characters, not just faces. It demonstrates his ability to combine fine detail, blurred impressions and dramatic effects of light and shade. During the 1650s, Rembrandt was the most celebrated artist in Amsterdam. Today, he’s recognised as one of the most important figures in the history of art and his work continues to inspire artists across the globe.

Christmas Arts Workshops with Young People

Following training with Heads for Arts, the Communities First Staff from Trefechan have provided a christmas arts workshop for young people from Trefechan. 15 young people attended and learnt skills which they can then use in the future.

The young people have now decided to continue with the card making in the Trefechan Youth Club and are planning future workshops for other celebrations.

Christmas Card Making Workshops

Trefechan Communities First in partnership with the Heads for Art Project team ran a training course this week in christmas card making skills. The aim of the workshop was to provide local workers with skills that can then be passed onto to local community members and residents of all ages. 12 workers attended the event from a range of local groups such as Communities First, Sandbrook house, Trefechan Nursery School, Tri County Play Association, Art and Crafts group and Trefechan Youth Club.

We will be running a series of christmas arts and crafts workshops in Trefechan in the near future, so watch out for dates in the local paper and on our notice board.
