Documentary film
Welsh culture and local heritage of Merthyr’s 4 rural wards
Canolfan a Menter Gymraeg Merthyr Tudful
In conjunction with Great Western Media Ltd and The Rural Development Fund.
Merthyr Tydfil – 01 September 2009 – Canolfan a Menter Gymraeg Merthyr Tudful has commissioned Merthyr’s only broadcast television production company, Great Western Media, to produce a series of films about the history and heritage of 4 rural wards in Merthyr Tydfil with a special interest in the use of the Welsh language in the areas. The film will document memories and real life stories from the borough’s rich and colorful history, focusing on the Bedlinog, Cyfarthfa, Vaynor and Ynysowen wards.
The film’s producers are looking for people who have a story to tell. Do you know someone or have memories about a relative or friend who used Welsh or Welsh phrases and words in their everyday spoken English? Or is there someone out there who can convey his or her memories of events that have shaped the history of the County Borough of Merthyr Tydfil? If so we would love to hear from them or you. We would also love to hear from any young people who would like to take part in the film making process.
In addition can you contribute any old cine’ film, photos, or videos that have significance, these will be digitized and restored so that the memories will become timeless.
The film, which is being funded by the Rural Development Plan, is being made for television broadcast in 2010.
Lis McLean, Development Officer at The Ganolfan belives that this is a magnificent opportunity for the communities of Merthyr Tydfil to create a digital archive of some of the towns great cultures and history. She added “It is well known that the people of Merthyr are renowned storytellers so what better way of recording these than to create a documentary film”.
Jamie Bevan, Outreach Officer at the Ganolfan says “The prospect of hearing and recording the various Welsh dialects that have been spoken in Merthyr for generations is very exciting. It’s a chance to understand more about how these various dialects have influenced the way we speak Welsh and English today”.
Great Western Media is a production company that has its roots firmly based in Merthyr. Currently producing a reality TV and radio show for BBC Wales, David Goodfield, Director of Great Western Media says; “There is a real possibility that we could uncover some home-movie-gold. Plus this is a great chance to meet some of the real characters of Merthyr. A bit of Merthyr’s got talent!”.

Ffilm Dogfennol
Treftadaeth a diwylliant Cymreig 4 ardal gwledig Merthyr
Canolfan a Menter Gymraeg Merthyr Tudful
Mewn partneriaeth a Great Western Media Ltd Cynllun Ddatblygu Gwledig.
Mae Canolfan a Menter Gymraeg Merthyr Tudful wedi comisiynu cwmni o Ferthyr, Great Western Media, I greu cyfres o ffilmiau ynglŷn ag hanes a threftadaeth Merthyr Tudful gyda phwyslais ar yr iaith Gymraeg a’i defnydd o ddydd i ddydd dros y blynyddoedd. Rhoddir sylw hefyd i sut mae’r iaith wedi effeithio ar dafodiaith siaradwyr Saesneg lleol gan nodi atgofion a storiâu o hanes lliwgar a chyfoethog y dref. Y pedwar prif ardal dan sylw yw Bedlinog, Cyfarthfa, Y Faenor ac Ynysowen.
Mae cynhyrchwyr y ffilmiau yn chwilio am bobol gyda stori i’w adrodd. Ydych chi’n adnabod rhywun neu a oes gyda chi atgofion ynglŷn â ffrind neu berthynas a’i defnydd o’r ddwy iaith? Neu a oes yna rywun allan ‘na all cyfleu ei atgofion nhw o’r digwyddiadau wnaeth helpu llunio’r Merthyr Tudful cyfoes? Os felly carwn glywed oddi wrthoch.
Maent hefyd yn edrych am unrhyw hen ffilm ‘cine’, lluniau neu fideo a fydd wedyn yn cael ei digideiddio ac adnewyddu i roi ar gof am byth.
Bydd y ffilm derfynol, sydd yn cael ei hariannu gan y Cynllun Datblygu Gwledig, yn barod i ddarllediad teledu yn 2010.
Cred Lis McLean, Swyddog Datblygu’r Ganolfan Gymraeg mai cyfle euraidd yw hwn i gymunedau Merthyr Tudful creu cofnod digidol o ddiwylliannau a hanesion pwysig y dref. Ychwanegodd “Mae pobol Merthyr yn adnabyddus am ei allu i adrodd stori a pa ffordd well o recordio'r rhain nag i greu ffilm ddogfennol.”
Meddai Jamie Bevan, Swyddog Maes y Ganolfan “Bydd y cyfle i glywed a recordio’r tafodieithoedd a siaradwyd ym Merthyr am genedlaethau yn gyffrous iawn. Mae’n cyfle deall mwy ynglŷn â sut mae’r tafodieithoedd yma wedi dylanwadi ar y ffordd rydym yn siarad Cymraeg a Saesneg heddiw.”
Cwmni cynhyrchu gyda’i wreiddiau wedi ei sefydlu’n gadarn ym Merthyr Tudful yw Great Western Media. Wrthi’n cynhyrchu rhaglen realaeth ar gyfer BBC Cymru, meddai David Goodfield, Cyfarwyddwr Great Western Media, “Mae yna gyfle da fan hyn i gwrdd â rhai o gymeriadau lliwgar go iawn Ferthyr.”
