09.30 Coffee/Tea
10.00 Welcome by Cllr. Clive Jones, Mayor of Merthyr Tydfil
Introduction: Huw Williams (Chair, Merthyr Chartist Forum)
10.10 Lecture: Joe England (historian) ‘Merthyr Chartism’
11.00 Walk through the café quarter, towards St Tydfil's Church - the scene of a peaceful Chartist protest on Sunday 18th August 1839
11.15 Street Theatre -- actors from Chance Encounters theatre company debate the Chartist cause. Shall we join the march to Newport?
11.45 The 'Chartist Characters' lead their audience back to Market Square Church, where taking the 'hot seat', they answer questions 'in role'
12.30 Huw Williams and Les James (historians) round up with a debate about the 1839 Chartist Rising
1.00 to 2.00 pm LUNCH - available in the café quarter or bring your own food (eating is allowed in the small hall). Book stalls, exhibition, slide show.
2.00 pm ‘Sounds like Chartism’ UAct2 theatre company
Multi media show - music, poetry, dance, story telling
2.50 pm TEA
3.15 pm “The Legacy – and into the future”
UAct2 Vox pop film, followed by workshop – producing a Charter for today
4.15 pm Viv Pugh (Dic Penderyn Society) ‘sums up’ the day
4.30 pm Finish
