Meeting/Cyfarfod 05/08/09

Steering Group / Grŵp Llywio
4.00pm, Wednesday, 5th August 2009
4.00yh, Dydd Mercher, 5ydd o Awst 2009Civic Centre / Canolfan Ddinesig
Present:
Gus Payne – Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council (GP), Lee Davies – 3Gs (LD), Carla Reynolds – Art and Enterprise (CR), Lesley Hodgson - Glamorgan Gates (LH).
1. Welcome / Apologies: Apologies received from; Alison Harris – VAMT, Sally McIntyre - Communities First, Dinah Pye – Active Music Service, Ken Long - Communities First, Kate Strudwick - H4A, David Jones - Yo! Maz, Chris Long - MTCBC.
2. Minutes from last meetingAll agreed last minutes as correct.
Creative Communities: The idea is still a possibility but following the failure to secure Convergence funding, MTCBC is now also looking at the possibility of its own Outcomes fund application, which would fit the CC format and could easily link in with other authorities.3. ACMF ChairNo nomination forms for the Chair and Vice Chair have been received. To facilitate future Chair’s role it was suggested to have timings alocated to each item on the agenda. Now that the group has been streamlined into a focus group, morning meetings may be more convenient for members.
4. ACMF main meeting format and date.
Suggested format and activities for the main meetings:
AGM type format.
Two meetings per year; one as an AGM type event then one six months on as a review with a similar format.
Produce an AGM type document, which would include:
Pictures
List of acheivments
Funding information
Updates
An invited speaker
Some sort of performance (possibly an extract from a forthcoming show)
A break as a networking opportunity
Refreshments
Speed dating – where individuals swap, spending 2 or 3 minutes to explain what they do.
A quiz with both fun and more relevant questions on the arts in the area. (50 questions).
A suggestion wall, with post-it notes – or some creative alternative
First new style meeting/event: February 2010
5. ACMF: A service provider or a networking tool?
All present felt that the Forum is a Networking tool though there has been some confusion around the Thought Sheet process, regarding who delivers on the idea’s posted. Ideas may be better recorded through the suggestion wall, which could be broken down into sections: Aspirations, SWOT etc.
6. ACMF at the Merthyr Show
This year the Arts, Culture and Media Forum have a stage at the Merthyr Show, on 31st August. The stage will be in the Bandstand area of the park. Performances currently confirmed are: Karen Moore, who has produced a CD in aid of cancer research, street dance from Ozza, 3Gs Choir and Dancers, H4A’s Pontlottyn Choir, Y Betti Galws, Glamorgan Gates Belly Dancers and Portuguese Folk Dancers.
If anyone else would like to perform, they need to contact arts@merthyr.gov.uk or 01685 725382 A.S.A.P.7. Updates / AOB
LD will be project managing this year’s “Merthyr’s Got Talent”, which will be on 6th November, with auditions on 7th October.
3Gs are working with partners as part of the New Music Forum to run a Battle of The Bands type event in Merthyr, with a grande finale in Bridgend.
3Gs are hoping to develop Bishop Hedley into a “Shool of The Future”, with hi-tec equipment including the capability to have international web conferencing, online lessons etc. There is a trip to see a school “School of The Future” in Abersychan on the morning of 16th September. Anyone interested should contact LD.
LD is in discussion with Jo Richards (Merthyr Tydfil College) to start up a dance aprenticeship.
3Gs will also be running another Pop Idol event.
Glamorgan Gates will be running the Big Draw again, during October at Cyfarthfa Park and Museum, using the theme of “World Colours”.
MTCBC will be employing a number of Arts Development trainees on the minimum wage as part of the Future Jobs Fund. The intention is that these posts will be based in a community setting most of the time but would come together to help with major community arts events (Global Village, Bedroc, Merthyr’s Got Talent etc.)
MTCBC are beginning to work on the idea of an International Artists Symposium

Ffilm Dogfennol / Documentary film
Welsh culture and local heritage of Merthyr’s 4 rural wards
Canolfan a Menter Gymraeg Merthyr Tudful
In conjunction with Great Western Media Ltd and The Rural Development Fund.
Merthyr Tydfil – 01 September 2009 – Canolfan a Menter Gymraeg Merthyr Tudful has commissioned Merthyr’s only broadcast television production company, Great Western Media, to produce a series of films about the history and heritage of 4 rural wards in Merthyr Tydfil with a special interest in the use of the Welsh language in the areas. The film will document memories and real life stories from the borough’s rich and colorful history, focusing on the Bedlinog, Cyfarthfa, Vaynor and Ynysowen wards.
The film’s producers are looking for people who have a story to tell. Do you know someone or have memories about a relative or friend who used Welsh or Welsh phrases and words in their everyday spoken English? Or is there someone out there who can convey his or her memories of events that have shaped the history of the County Borough of Merthyr Tydfil? If so we would love to hear from them or you. We would also love to hear from any young people who would like to take part in the film making process.
In addition can you contribute any old cine’ film, photos, or videos that have significance, these will be digitized and restored so that the memories will become timeless.
The film, which is being funded by the Rural Development Plan, is being made for television broadcast in 2010.
Lis McLean, Development Officer at The Ganolfan belives that this is a magnificent opportunity for the communities of Merthyr Tydfil to create a digital archive of some of the towns great cultures and history. She added “It is well known that the people of Merthyr are renowned storytellers so what better way of recording these than to create a documentary film”.
Jamie Bevan, Outreach Officer at the Ganolfan says “The prospect of hearing and recording the various Welsh dialects that have been spoken in Merthyr for generations is very exciting. It’s a chance to understand more about how these various dialects have influenced the way we speak Welsh and English today”.
Great Western Media is a production company that has its roots firmly based in Merthyr. Currently producing a reality TV and radio show for BBC Wales, David Goodfield, Director of Great Western Media says; “There is a real possibility that we could uncover some home-movie-gold. Plus this is a great chance to meet some of the real characters of Merthyr. A bit of Merthyr’s got talent!”.

Ffilm Dogfennol
Treftadaeth a diwylliant Cymreig 4 ardal gwledig Merthyr
Canolfan a Menter Gymraeg Merthyr Tudful
Mewn partneriaeth a Great Western Media Ltd Cynllun Ddatblygu Gwledig.
Mae Canolfan a Menter Gymraeg Merthyr Tudful wedi comisiynu cwmni o Ferthyr, Great Western Media, I greu cyfres o ffilmiau ynglŷn ag hanes a threftadaeth Merthyr Tudful gyda phwyslais ar yr iaith Gymraeg a’i defnydd o ddydd i ddydd dros y blynyddoedd. Rhoddir sylw hefyd i sut mae’r iaith wedi effeithio ar dafodiaith siaradwyr Saesneg lleol gan nodi atgofion a storiâu o hanes lliwgar a chyfoethog y dref. Y pedwar prif ardal dan sylw yw Bedlinog, Cyfarthfa, Y Faenor ac Ynysowen.
Mae cynhyrchwyr y ffilmiau yn chwilio am bobol gyda stori i’w adrodd. Ydych chi’n adnabod rhywun neu a oes gyda chi atgofion ynglŷn â ffrind neu berthynas a’i defnydd o’r ddwy iaith? Neu a oes yna rywun allan ‘na all cyfleu ei atgofion nhw o’r digwyddiadau wnaeth helpu llunio’r Merthyr Tudful cyfoes? Os felly carwn glywed oddi wrthoch.
Maent hefyd yn edrych am unrhyw hen ffilm ‘cine’, lluniau neu fideo a fydd wedyn yn cael ei digideiddio ac adnewyddu i roi ar gof am byth.
Bydd y ffilm derfynol, sydd yn cael ei hariannu gan y Cynllun Datblygu Gwledig, yn barod i ddarllediad teledu yn 2010.
Cred Lis McLean, Swyddog Datblygu’r Ganolfan Gymraeg mai cyfle euraidd yw hwn i gymunedau Merthyr Tudful creu cofnod digidol o ddiwylliannau a hanesion pwysig y dref. Ychwanegodd “Mae pobol Merthyr yn adnabyddus am ei allu i adrodd stori a pa ffordd well o recordio'r rhain nag i greu ffilm ddogfennol.”
Meddai Jamie Bevan, Swyddog Maes y Ganolfan “Bydd y cyfle i glywed a recordio’r tafodieithoedd a siaradwyd ym Merthyr am genedlaethau yn gyffrous iawn. Mae’n cyfle deall mwy ynglŷn â sut mae’r tafodieithoedd yma wedi dylanwadi ar y ffordd rydym yn siarad Cymraeg a Saesneg heddiw.”
Cwmni cynhyrchu gyda’i wreiddiau wedi ei sefydlu’n gadarn ym Merthyr Tudful yw Great Western Media. Wrthi’n cynhyrchu rhaglen realaeth ar gyfer BBC Cymru, meddai David Goodfield, Cyfarwyddwr Great Western Media, “Mae yna gyfle da fan hyn i gwrdd â rhai o gymeriadau lliwgar go iawn Ferthyr.”

Head 4 Arts is a community arts organisation covering the eastern Heads of The Valleys area (Merthyr Tydfil, Blaenau Gwent, north Caerphilly and north Torfaen). H4A is working towards a project called Fflach / Flash: a large-scale, bilingual community production which will be presented as part of the 2010 Ebbw Vale Eisteddfod celebrations. Over the next year H4A will be visiting communities across the area gathering stories, ideas and inspiring creativity for this exciting and unique project. If you or your community group are interested in being involved, whatever your interest – we want to hear from you! For further information, please contact: info@head4arts.org.uk or 01495 357816 or visit http://www.head4arts.org.uk/.
Poet’s VisitThe next Open Mike Night at The Imperial Hotel welcomes Welsh Book of The Year Finalist; Samantha Wynne-Rhydderch, who will be reading together with others on 24th September. Samantha grew up in New Quay, Ceredigion where she still lives. She read Classics at Cambridge followed by an M.A. in Writing at Cardiff University. She lived in Oxford, Paris and the Isles of Scilly before returning to New Quay. Samantha was awarded a Hawthornden Fellowship in 2005 to write her debut collection for Picador, Not In These Shoes, published in June 2008. This title was on the 2009 Wales Book of the Year Short List. Samantha Wynne-Rhydderch’s debut collection for Picador introduces a young poet with a remarkable range of imaginative tactics at her disposal, and seems to announce not one, but several new voices. Not In These Shoes is an act of uncanny ventriloquism, and a distinct spirit seems to haunt each of Wynne-Rhydderch’s meticulously drawn spaces. Whether conjuring the interior of a toy snowstorm, a flooded valley, a woman in a backless dress, a ship’s figurehead or a matador in a hotel room, Wynne-Rhydderch finds a voice that perfectly commands our attention. For further information on Samantha visit http://www.rhydderch.com/ or for information on Open Mike Nights please contact: (01685) 725382 arts@merthyr.gov.uk.
