MERTHYR TYDFIL ARTS CULTURE & MEDIA FORUM
FFORWM Y CELFYDDYDAU, DIWYLLIANT A’R CYFRYNGAU

Steering Group / Grŵp Llywio
2.00pm, Thursday, 4th February 2010
2.00yh, Dydd Iau, 4ydd o Chwefrorr 2010
VAMT

Present: Gus Payne – MTCBC (GP), Alison Harris – VAMT (AH), Lis McLean – Menter (LM) and volunteer Charlotte Watts.

1. Welcome / Apologies: Apologies received from; Lesley Hodgson, Michelle Powell, David Jones (DJ), Kate Strudwick, Chris Long and Lee Davies (LD).

2. Minutes from last meeting
Agreed as correct (no messages have been passed on of any mistakes)

3. ACMF main meeting event planning.
GP has been in touch with LD who has confirmed that the 3Gs Community Choir would perform (they won the Best Choir category at Merthyr’s Got Talent). LD also confirmed that Suzanne Foley and Gwyn Jones would give a case study of how the 3Gs Arts and Music was established and has continued to flourish.
Fiona Winter has also been back in contact and will do a short demonstration with a small group of about 5, which will include some participation.
Andrew Thomas has confirmed that we can use the Myfanwy Theatre and Martyn Jones (Art Dept) is happy for us to borrow some easels for the night
DJ has not confirmed whether anyone from YMAZ will be doing a presentation yet.
LM suggested including a short slot to update on the Zoar Arts Centre project.
GP also passed a first rough draft of the Arts in Merthyr document/pamphlet, highlighting some of the activity over the last year or so.
Action: LM to confirm harpists for the buffet and teas an coffees period.
Action: GP to email Arts in Merthyr document to the rest of the group for comment.

4. Audiences Wales (AW) Training
AW is able to offer some training to ACMF members in things like marketing, press and research.
LM explained that soon she would be looking for members of an Arts Centre Management Committee to oversee the running of Zoar Arts Centre. Training in being an “effective management committee member” would be a good start to help guide new members in best practice.
High quality training around creating a “marketing strategy” to build participation would also be beneficial if at a sufficiently high standard.
This could also be something to flag up in the main meeting in April
Action: Include AW training potential as part of the April wider group meeting
Action: GP to run ideas past Nick at AW to discuss possibilities

5. Updates
AH requested an update on the Merthyr Tydfil Arts Centre proposal as there appears to be some speculation on the Old Town Hall being used. AH pointed out that at an early stage this proposal, to use the Old Town Hall was rejected by ArtService the feasibility study consultants. GP explained that neither he nor CL is aware of any firm proposal as yet and a new Arts Centre for Merthyr is still uncertain.
AH also asked about the position of the current Arts Strategy. GP explained that the strategy will be finalised and taken to Council when we have a firm confirmation of whether the new Arts Centre will or will not go ahead.
The Public Art Strategy for the Heads of the Valleys will be launched around the time of the Ebbw Vale National Eisteddfod.
6. AOB
LM flagged up the fact that she will soon be looking for Management Committee members for the new Zoar Arts Centre.
LM also explained that new gates to Zoar need to be designed. GP suggested passing him some of the details as this is something that could be covered by the HoV Public Art Steering Group, using HoV money to produce some functional public art, with possibly community workshops to help community buy-in and to raise awareness of public art.
Action: LM and GP to discuss the possibilities for the new Zoar Gates to be a HoV public art project

7. Next Steering Group meeting:
Tuesday, 16th March 2010, 2pm, VAMT.

Community Choir
Merthyr Aloud, Merthyr Tydfil's inclusive community choir, is seeking new members for its next venture - taking part in a huge community event in Ebbw Vale linked to this year's National Eisteddfod in July. A regional community play is being staged by Head for Arts and will involve community choirs, drama groups, musicians and dancers from across the four county boroughs of Merthyr, Blaenau Gwent, Torfaen and Caerphilly. The bilingual play will take place on the site's main stage, the day before the Eisteddfod’s opening ceremony.
Merthyr Aloud meets in the room behind St David's Church every Thursday from 1-3 pm. and is supported by Head for Arts in partnership with Glamorgan Gates. No experience is necessary, everyone is welcome to a warm and friendly atmosphere where songs from different musical traditions are taught by ear. A number of half day weekend workshops are planned to include all those who are unable to attend on a week day. In this way, it is hoped that other singers from Merthyr's many and varied choirs will be able to also take part in this exciting event. Merthyr Express column

18th February 10
Modern Dance
Gig by Earthfall, Wales’ multi award winning dance company, will be coming to the Myfanwy Theatre in Merthyr Tydfil College this coming Monday, 22nd February. Don’t miss this chance to catch Earthfall’s radical choreography, live music and strong visual imagery. Directed by Jesica Cohen and Jim Ennis, and designed by Mike Bookes, Gig is a high-octane satirical rampage through the human condition with dark humour, bold dance, live music and film. Gig is the story of a band that encapsulates the world outside with songs, film and extreme dances of love and loathing. The transient and turbulent relationships, trashed instruments, bloody noses and drunken reconciliations are witnessed as they struggle to make sense of their world. This 20th anniversary production follows a band on tour, living in a surreal world removed from the reality of life. Transporting the audience on an emotional ride, from the exciting to the ridiculous and the comical to the poignant. For more information visit: http://www.thisisgig.com/. The performance starts at 8pm with tickets priced at £6.50 full price and £5 concessions. For further information, please contact 01685 726161 or email mtheatre@merthyr.ac.uk.

Fightstar play Millennium Music Hall Cardiff tonight

P4 Music presents:
FIGHTSTAR Millennium Music Hall Cardiff TONIGHT! Some tickets still available £12.50

Fightstar's debut EP, They Liked You Better When You Were Dead (2005) was a critical success. Since then, their three studio albums have obtained top 40 chartings and critical praise. Indeed, debut album Grand Unification (2006) was regarded as "one of the best British rock albums of the past decade" by Paul Brannigan of weekly rock magazine Kerrang!. Scottish publication, The Fly, also said that the album "remains one of the 21st Century's ultimate rock debuts". Nominations at the Kerrang! Awards for 'Best British Newcomer' and 'Best British Band' soon followed, before second album, One Day Son, This Will All Be Yours (2007), peaked at #27 on the UK Album Chart. The follwing year, a b-sides compilation album titled, Alternate Endings (2008) was released. The four-piece then funded and co-produced third album, Be Human (2009), which became their highest charting album after peaking at #20 in the UK.

They play Cardiff tonight tickets are £12.50 from Box Office 02920 230130 , http://www.seetickets.com/ or http://www.p4music.co.uk/

MACHINE HEAD Newport Centre Newport 17/02/2010 26.00

MACHINE HEAD have added 5 more dates to their UK headline run in support of current silver-certified album (60,000 UK units sold), 'The Blackening'. The tour, dubbed 'The Black Procession' now includes shows in Newport, Leeds, Newcastle, Dublin and Belfast.

The guys will be supported by labelmates, HATEBREED (whose eponymous new album is out NOW), Bleeding Through, with All Shall Perish opening the evening's proceedings. Tickets for the extra dates go on sale now FRIDAY 27th November from LIVE NATION.
Since the release of 'The Blackening' in March of 2007, Machine Head have toured incessantly, playing more than 300 shows. While this 3 year-long album cycle has seen the band share stages as main support to Metallica, Slipknot, Slayer, Marilyn Manson and Megadeth, headline the Jägermeister stage on the Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival, and headline the legendary Wacken festival to over 85,000 people, it hasn't seen them on a full-fledged headline tour, playing full-length sets. Until now.

Machine Head frontman/guitarist Robb Flynn says, "After 3 years of touring we are beyond stoked to finish this tour cycle on our own terms, with our show, our stage, our production, our control and we're lucky enough to bring three of our favourite bands along with us. It's going to be fucking massive!!!" Hatebreed vocalist Jamey Jasta concurs, stating, "Machine Head and Hatebreed on the same stages across Europe?!?! This will be the heaviest and most pit-inducing tour of 2010. Make no mistake, if you miss this show, I feel sorry for you!"

LUCY WAINWRIGHT Toucan Club Cardiff 21/03/2010

Lucy Wainwright Roche was born into songwriting royalty as the daughter of Suzzy Roche (of The Roches) and Loudon Wainwright III. Even in such an artistically talented family - half-brother Rufus Wainwright and half-sister Martha Wainwright are both successful musicians - Roche remains unique. Her voice sounds more delicate than that of her sister Martha, and her songs feel less theatrical than those of her brother Rufus.

Roche was once an elementary schoolteacher in New York City, but when Rufus Wainwright asked her to join him on tour as a background vocalist, she caught the performing bug. Life on the road soon took over, and she has released two EPs since: 8 Songs and then 8 More.

She will perform at the Tocun Club on March 21st – tickets are priced at £8.00 Tickets from Box Office 02920 230130, http://www.seetickets.com/ and http://www.p4music.co.uk/

Nine successful albums and over 5 million sales worldwide, The Alarm's pioneering use of acoustic guitars brought the band into direct contact with the likes of Bob Dylan, Neil Young and U2, all whom have appeared and sung on stage with The Alarm.

Most recently the band has released it's 9th Album in "UNDER ATTACK".
Produced by George Wiliams (Babyshambles), and Martin Wilding (Poppy Fields, Doves) it's first single "SUPERCHANNEL" reached number One in it's initial week of release in the UK Rock Charts to the clamourous applause of critics and legions of fans worldwide.

Dance Gig
Wales’ multi award winning dance company Earthfall bring their radical choreography with live music and strong visual imagery to Merthyr Tydfil on Monday, 22nd February, with their performance Gig, which will be visiting the Myfanwy Theatre at Merthyr Tydfil College.

She will perform at the Tocun Club on March 21st – tickets are priced at £8.00 Tickets from Box Office 02920 230130, www.seetickets.com and www.p4music.co.uk
